25 miles away from the port, (45 minutes drive) lies Lucca, a roman colony in the ancient
times, then a wealthy and powerful self governing city in the middle age, as the fine palace and many churches bear
testimony.
Surrounded by massive wall, the well preserved old city is a maze of
alley, where you can stroll from square to square, being sure to find something interesting around the corner, like the amphitheatre
square, which retain the oval shape of an old roman amphitheatre that use to stand
there, or visit the Guinigi tower, home of an old prominent family, the Cathedral with its
treasure, like the tomb of Ilaria del Carretto, by Jacopo della Quercia, the
Fillungo, the main street with its fine old shops…
After enjoying a typical lunch, we’ll head for the nearby countryside to visit an old aristocratic villa, with its garden, the some century old original furniture and frescoes where the local guide will give you some information about the history of the family, customs etc. Finally on our way back, a detour via Pisa to admire the Leaning
Tower, the Cathedral and the Baptistery.
